Un lupo vittima di bracconaggio nel Parco della Murgia Materana
A wolf's carcass was found last Friday (March 4, 2011, ed) from within a naturalist Park of the Murgia of Matera. Was immediately alerted the State Forestry Corps, arrived on location with a patrol of the control station of Matera. In all likelihood, the animal was killed in a poaching incident, the body was wounded in several parts by gunshots. The discovery concerns a specimen of a young male, as has been inferred from examination of the physical characteristics and teeth in perfect condition. The predator was perhaps in search of new hunting grounds, as usually occurs between January and March when approaching the spawning season for the young wolves born in the previous year. The carcass was seized and handed over the veterinary service of Matera for further investigations. Given the circumstances of his death, was also sent notice of the news of crime to the prosecutor of Matera, which launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the killing. The discovery of the wolf into the park, so far from the natural habitat of the mammal, is an exceptional event. The final report of its presence in the territory of Matera, in fact, dates back to 1942.

This is a very rare and localized species in this period that begins the delicate reproductive activity, with the selection of nest cavities and strengthening the bond between partners. It is, in fact, a very interesting species as distributed mainly in Central and Eastern Europe with small relict populations in southern Italy. Basilicata
Forests are home to most of the Italian population of this rare woodpecker, considered vulnerable in the IUCN Red List of breeding birds in Italy and entered in the Alliance. I to Directive 79/409/EEC, under which areas are identified Special Protection Areas (SPAs) are part of the Natura 2000 network.
Forests of Basilicata, largely managed to trees, offrono un ambiente ideale per la sua riproduzione; la specie, infatti, ama i boschi vetusti, ricchi di alberi morti o deperienti dove nidificare o cercare gli invertebrati di cui si nutre.
Densità molto elevate si riscontrano nel Bosco di Montepiano, come anche nella Foresta di Gallipoli Cognato e in alcune Faggete dell’Appennino Lucano.
Si ritiene dunque opportuno che nella pianificazione territoriale e nell’individuazione dei piani di assestamento forestale, si tenga conto delle esigenze di questa specie, a tutti gli effetti bioindicatrice degli ecosistemi forestali.
Il Picchio rosso mezzano può essere a tutti gli effetti considerato il simbolo dell’integrità delle foreste lucane.

Sunday, February 20, 2011 we held the first walk excursion organized by the Association neonascente "Fotoclub Matera," which was attended by fifteen members.
The path is articulated by the district starting Agna Le Piane and heading towards the stone complex of S. Nicola all'Ofra. The purpose of the walk was to collect, through the photographic images, especially the testimony of the territory represented by the flora and the signs of rock civilization has developed over the centuries.
Much importance was given to the analysis techniques for collecting and storing water, the subject of a study project to the best knowledge of the area.

Saturday, February 19 in the Park of the Murgia Materana a Sparrowhawk, a Buzzard and an Owl, three beautiful birds of prey who live permanently in the territory of Lucania, have regained their freedom after a period of care at the Center Wild Animals Rescue of the Natural Reserve of San Giuliano. The animals had been given to the leaders of the structure as a result of their discovery in terms of total difficulties, almost certainly destined to die if they were not rescued in time. The Owl
(Athene noctua) was found Nov. 27, 2010 by some citizens of Tricarico that delivery to the local control of Carabinieri who brought it promptly at the Center for Recovery. Here is a veterinary examination allowed to diagnose a severe ocular trauma that prevented the small nocturnal bird of prey normally use the view, to move and feed independently. A period of special care and adequate assistance have allowed the full recovery of vision and a return to freedom after 82 days of stay in the structures of the Centre.
The Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) was found instead of December 6 last year near the hill near Matera Timmari after an impact, probably against a vehicle, provided him with a fractured humerus and ocular trauma. It was delivered to the Centre by Clara Ricci, owner of the farm Tempa Bianca, who found himself on the ground unable to fly. Transferred to the Centre was immediately subjected to veterinary examination. A delicate surgery performed on the same day by Dr. Tralli and subsequent treatment at the facility allowed him to fully recover its autonomy and the ability to predict and fly perfectly.
The Buzzard (Buteo buteo) was found just over a month ago, on the ground lifeless and unable to move the least, by some people close to Miglionico, not far from the Reserve of San Giuliano. His condition was very serious indeed: a bleeding wound to the head and total paralysis in both legs left no room for optimism. Here too, the patience and professionalism of veterinary and managers of the Centre have allowed a small miracle. The Buzzard is fully healed, his legs are back in shape and head injuries have almost healed. E 'was therefore decided to release it in its habitat in the knowledge that will resume its irreplaceable role of predator, the same way as the Hawk and Owl, in the balance of nature and the maintenance of biodiversity.
All three specimens were ringed before release with the help of Egidio Mallia, ringers ISPRA which for decades allowed the Centre works for the collection of scientific data.
The activity of Prey Rescue Centre and other protected wild animals was carried out from 2006 to 2009 thanks to funding from the Project Life Nature Lucani Raptors. For all of 2010 but the service, no longer financed by European funds, it was nevertheless guaranteed by the company De Rerum Natura with the collaboration of ALTURA's passion and professionalism the head of the Centre and its collaborators, in addition all'insostituibile role of the responsible veterinarian Dr. Vito Tralli who visited and worked whenever needed. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Bari has worked with the Centre supporting some interventions and therapies. In the single year 2010 were assigned to the Centre 200 individuals injured or in difficulty, most of which are protected species in Italy and Europe.
The Managing Director Matthew Visceglia says:
" We hope that the media resulting from the bodies and institutions responsible for the care and recovery of wildlife can become a constant commitment and annual and should no longer be subject to financial gaps that do not allow to play with confidence in this important work of protecting native fauna protection and conservation of biodiversity in the province of Matera.
The role of the Recovery Centre is also crucial for important aspects of educational and awareness of citizens and schools. Not by chance often to free participation in an attentive and interested in the activities of the Centre. Other important features of our work related to the contribution of wildlife research and monitoring, collaboration with local health care facilities for some aspects monitoring and reporting of certain diseases found in wild specimens, the study of dispersal and migration of the released individuals. The Recovery Center also offers counseling, limited to their ability to interevento, citizens even in cases where there are special situations that involve the relationship between humans and wildlife, with particular reference to the synanthropic species. E’ davvero sconcertante apprendere come alcuni uffici della Regione Lazio continuino ad emanare ordinanze di ampliamento della discarica di Roccasecca e a consentire alla MAD, Società che gestisce l’impianto, di smaltire rifiuti di tipologie diverse da quelle che furono autorizzate per fronteggiare l’emergenza ambientale verificatasi all’inizio degli anni 2000. Infatti, due nuovi provvedimenti regionali hanno recentemente colpito la località Cerreto : il primo, adottato con determinazione n. 6353 del 13 dicembre 2010 a seguito di richiesta presentata dalla MAD, prevede la realizzazione di un ulteriore invaso di 60.000 metri cubi; il secondo, deliberato con atto n. Z0010 del 31 dicembre 2010, autorizza il gestore della landfill to accept radioactive waste, after being subjected to "extraordinary procedure" in the installation of Colfelice.
The so-called "extraordinary procedure" consists of a specialized intervention that should be performed to identify and then neutralize radioactive substances and make them, therefore, harmless. If indeed the suspect material is interamante decontaminated, even through their stay in quarantine of the compactors in the system, why an ordinance is enacted to authorize the regional MAD to accept this type of waste? We are the usual! The biofilter system of Colfelice not work? So much ... is that people breathe the poisonous hydrogen sulfide instead of replacing the biofilters or perform maintenance. The portal radiometric detecting loads of radioactive waste, the plant installed at the entrance of Colfelice is constantly alert and decontamination of the wastes is time-consuming and expensive? So ... it's much easier to ship as soon as the hazardous cargo in landfills. Besides, how risky the President of the SAF and the owner of the landfill Cerreto? Do not live in Roccasecca, neither they nor their families!
A resent the next order, pending the Mayors of the Roccasecca Colfelice, brought out of their torpor and dalla loro inettitudine e restituiscano un minimo di dignità alle comunità che amministrano.

The Grey Heron can be seen as one of the most common wading birds of wetlands in Europe. In the Natural Reserve of San Giuliano, as in most lakes and rivers Lucan, this species is now firmly linked to the aquatic habitat. Its habits and its food eclecticism mean that it can be considered a "gourmet" because it feeds on many species of vertebrates and macroinvertebrates in the environment in which they live. It is not difficult to see, even away from the waters and especially in fields where forage tirelessly hunts also mice and voles, with major benefits for farmers.

Cost Of Catering For 150 People
Effettuato il Censimento dell'avifauna acquatica nella Riserva Naturale di San Giuliano
Anatidae on the shores of Lago di San Giuliano
On January 23, 2011 within the National IWC (International Waterbird Census), organized and coordinated by ISPRA (National Institute for the Protection and Environmental Research) was held in the Natural Reserve of San Giuliano a census of wild aquatic overwintering. The initiative, which takes place several years with local support and collaboration of the Wildlife Rescue Centre, is used to monitor in a single day, chosen as standard in un periodo definito, lo stato dell'area umida in riferimento alle specie spiccatamente acquatiche presenti.
Al censimento hanno preso parte 7 rilevatori: Matteo Visceglia, Egidio Fulco, Egidio Mallia, Caterina Coppola, Mariangela Arancione, Cristiano Liuzzi, Claudio Bernardi.
Il conteggio è stato particolarmente difficoltoso sia per le condizioni delle acque del lago particolarmente agitate, sia per la conformazione dell'intera zona umida che si estende in questo periodo su un tratto di circa 8 km tra lago e fiume ed è caratterizzata da numerose insenature dove la fauna spesso si rifugia tra la vegetazione occultandosi alla vista.
Il conteggio è stato effettuato in modo coordinato dividendo il gruppo in due squadre che hanno lavorato, using appropriate equipment independently and then compare their own data and summarize results. The observed
aquatic species that fall within the parameters required by the IWC were 20 while the total number of specimens surveyed amounts to about 1200. Whatever the objective of this study were also surveyed 33 other aquatic species that typically were not therefore specific object of research IWC.
With the data collected, there was a substantial drop in some ducks normally present in the past with much higher numbers. Among these especially Wigeon and Teal which together do not exceed 330 units while in the two previous winters the same species far surpassed those one thousand copies, with peaks of 2-3 thousand people in some winters. There are no known causes for this decline but is believed to be linked to a range of factors including the availability and the trophic level of the lake. Should not be excluded, however, external factors (including the phenomena of poaching) of which we do not have sufficient objective evaluation.
